How much does a medevac flight cost?

Reviewed by the AirAmbulance.org editorial team · Updated 20 October 2026 · Editorial policy

Medevac flight cost depends mostly on distance, the aircraft and the level of medical care. Short helicopter flights and long international evacuations differ by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Published ranges

  • Helicopter emergency flights: GAO reported median prices above $36,000; current bills are often higher.
  • Regional fixed-wing flights: often published around $15,000–70,000.
  • Transatlantic flights: commonly about $90,000–180,000.
  • Asia-Pacific to North America or Europe: about $150,000–300,000 or more.

Lower-cost alternatives

  • A medical escort on a commercial flight for stable patients.
  • Treatment locally until the patient can fly normally, if safe.

Who pays

  • Travel insurance or an evacuation plan for trips abroad.
  • Health insurance for medically necessary domestic flights.
  • Self-pay, often upfront, when there's no cover.

Questions

Why is a medevac so expensive?

Dedicated aircraft, medical crews on standby, specialised equipment, positioning flights and international fees all add up.

Is there a cheaper way to medevac someone?

For stable patients, a medical escort on a commercial flight usually costs far less.

Does travel insurance pay for a medevac?

Policies with evacuation cover usually do, up to their limit, when the insurer arranges it.
