Bringing a patient home from the Gulf to India

Reviewed by the AirAmbulance.org editorial team · Updated 6 November 2026 · Editorial policy

Millions of Indians live and work in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. When someone falls seriously ill or is injured, families often want them treated and cared for at home in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra or North India.

Two ways to fly

  • Stretcher on a commercial flight: many airlines can fit a stretcher on certain routes, with a doctor or nurse travelling alongside. The airline needs a medical clearance form (MEDIF) completed by the treating doctor in advance.
  • Air ambulance: a private jet with a medical crew, for critical patients or when the airline can't take a stretcher. It costs much more.

Who pays

  • Health insurance is mandatory for employees in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but basic plans often don't include repatriation to India. Check the policy and ask the insurer.
  • Employers, sponsors and community associations sometimes help.
  • Indian missions run the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF), which can help Indian nationals in distress in some cases. Ask the embassy or consulate.

Paperwork

  • Passport, and clearance from the employer or sponsor where the visa requires it.
  • Medical report and fitness-to-fly confirmation from the treating hospital, plus the airline's MEDIF for a stretcher booking.
  • A receiving hospital in India confirmed before departure, and an ambulance waiting at the arrival airport.

Costs in India

  • For air ambulance flights, Indian insurer guides commonly cite about ₹1–5 lakh per flying hour. Use the cost calculator to estimate a specific route.
